Most are merit-based. For example, the Graduate School conducts competitions for one-semester Off-Campus Research Dissertation Fellowships and one-year Doctoral Dissertation Completion Fellowships. For a complete listing of fellowships offered, visit the UNC Graduate School website.

The Report of Final Dissertation (the written document) and the Final Oral Exam (oral thesis defense) are two separate events (and separate sections for committee signatures) for the Graduate School. For the Neuroscience Curriculum the Final Oral Exam is itself generally divided into two parts as well: the closed meeting defense and a later open public seminar.

The Graduate School will approve and publicize the examination date, time and place in the UNC Today or in any other appropriate university publication two weeks prior to the scheduled date. The Graduate School forwards a results form to the student’s Research Advisor as approval of the defense.
The Graduate School requires PhD candidates take a minimum of 15 hours beyond the MA, including six hours of dissertation research (HIST 994). In order for students to become Ph.D. Candidates, they must have 1) completed coursework, 2) passed comprehensive examinations, and 3) illustrated their ability to define a compelling research project.
Graduate School Fellowships. Types of Fellowships. The Graduate School offers three different types of dissertation fellowships on a competitive basis. 1) Dissertation Completion Fellowships provide a year of full funding for students who will complete their dissertations during the period of the fellowship.
